I’m going home tomorrow morning!  I am so excited and ready to dive back into Eddie’s Energy Bars.  I need to run and go to a study group for my last exam of freshman year tomorrow.

I hope everyone has a great day.   Back in Vermont tomorrow!

Did I Make the Most of My Freshman Year?

May 11, 2007

With all of my exams done and over with except for math on Tuesday, I am starting to pack up. Freshman year is over already. Where did it go? It seems like it just started yesterday, but it is time to come to terms that a quarter of my college career is over. Sitting here, I am deciding whether I really made the best of my freshman year.

I think I had fun during the year, but I should have done more. I should have gotten more involved in campus groups. Throughout the year I ended up joining two groups: Helping Hands, which put on a holiday party for under-privileged children, and the Hall 14 Council, for which I was President of my hall. You would think this was a position of incredible responsibility, but it really wasn’t. We put on a couple of events, of which not too many people came too…kind of a downer.

On the brighter side, I was able to get to know more people. A lot of my friends think I know everyone, but really I don’t. I truly enjoy talking to different people and
learning from them how to grow my healthy energy bar business in Vermont. Of the people that I met this year, I would have to say that all the professors have really helped me excel in not only my business, but have positively affected my outlook on life. It kind of makes me want to teach a part-time entrepreneurship or marketing class at my high school while growing Eddie’s Energy Bars. There are not nearly enough business courses offered there to have students fully grasp the business concept.

Overall, freshman year was a blast, and I can’t wait till sophomore year starts in the fall. Come back to check out tomorrow’s post when I talk about the clubs I will probably join in the fall and how I can get the most out of them for me, and my company.

Was your freshman year of college as exciting as mine? (It might bring back bad memories–sorry.)

Bring It On College FINALS!

May 9, 2007

Posts will be sparce the next couple of days because I will be studying like crazy for my finals.

If anyone is at all curious when my finals are, here is a nice little list:

Wednesday (Today): Macroeconomics and English
Thursday: Accounting–this will be my hardest exam
Friday: Global Politics
Tuesday: Math (Calculus)

So, my exams shouldn’t be too bad. I just need to study for them.  That will be the hardest thing to do :P

Good luck fellow college students!

What it means to “be” your job

May 6, 2007

As the daily goings-on of a college student aren’t that interesting as homemade energy bars, and I am on a one tunnel mind with finals right around the corner, I thought I would turn an essay prompt given to me by my English professor into an entry, rather than a final essay due on Wednesday. (Don’t worry–the essay is done. I just need to proofread)

Here is the prompt:

While it is common for us to think of a job as merely something one does to make money, for many characters we’ve read about this semester, the notion of “a job” transcends mere employment and is instead deeply involved in how that character defines his or her very identity. Compare this notion of “being” one’s job as it appears in some of the texts we’ve read this semester. Be sure to comment on how each situation is resolved and how this resolution helps us understand what it means to “be” one’s job in each of the texts under consideration.

Now, obviously I’m going to have to tweak some words for this post. I am not talking about books here, but the “notion of being one’s job”. I don’t like to think about myself as Michael Adams, the owner of Eddie’s Energy Bars in Richmond, Vermont. I like to think about myself as Michael Adams, the son of Jeanne and Ed Adams, fitness and health guru, avid foodie, and Bryant University Freshman. But, it just so happens that I own a healthy energy bar company.

In no way would I like to usurp my entire life into my business. That would not be living life the way it is supposed to be lived. I shape my business around my life’s happenings. If I want to go to a movie, I go to a movie. I need to have fun. I’m still a young adult that needs to go out with my friends, and not constantly worry if I got an e-mail from a customer. It’s hard for me now, because I probably check my e-mail 3,000 times a day. Ok, I am exaggerating.

I can think of a couple of examples where people have their head stuck in the sand, and don’t notice that their job surrounds them constantly, not allowing them to go on with daily life. Sadly, this is American Culture–work, work, work up the corporate ladder you go. Pretty soon everyone in corporate America will be their job. But, that is what is so great about entrepreneurship: You are able to be you, with a business on the side.

Feel free to leave comments to this great essay prompt, or in response to what I think about it.

Have a great day!

Go to the gym during exam time

May 5, 2007

I apologize that I did not post yesterday. I ended up playing near three hours of wiffle-ball, and during that time I managed to pull some muscles in my back. So, I took some advil, and went to bed. Even though I go to the gym six days a week, and stretch more than most people, I still pull muscles. While on that same topic, as the year winds down for must college students, thoughts of being on the beach and lighting up the grill come to mind (They have been in my mind for the past three weeks). However, it is important to remember that the most crucial time to go to the gym is during exam time, for a couple of reasons:

Usually no one is there
No one goes to the gym while exams are going on. Maybe they are cramming for a test they have the next day, which is not the way to study by the way, but there really is no one in the gym, so you will be able to get the machines you want, and be out of there rather quickly to prepare for your next exam.

It clears your mind
For me, the gym is like a sanctuary. When I am there, I don’t think about anything else but focusing on my workout: no school, no company matters, nothing. It really helps to be focused because you can get a great workout in when you are not worrying about whether or not you will fail your Global Politics exam.

Working out in the morning gets you focused
I’ve said it before, and I’m going to say it again. Working out in the morning, followed by a well-balanced breakfast is one of my favorite things to do. Not only for the above reasons, but it gets me pumped for the day, and more alert to ace my exams! If you want this great feeling too, then start working out in the morning.

My plan is to work out in the morning next week, grab some breakfast, and head to exams. I find last minute cram studying is not a good thing, because it only makes me more nervous–I’ll thwart that this time around by going to the gym.

Enjoy this beautiful weather.
