Eating Healthier with Seasonal Fruits and Vegetables
July 1, 2007, 4:31 pm
Filed under: Buying Local, Community, Nutrition

It’s that time of year again, when fruits and veggies are available all throughout the nation for your tantalizing taste-buds to enjoy. Also, they are at a much cheaper price than during the winter months, so take advantage of that and use them in your meal preparations for dinner, or throw some in a bag for a mid-day snack.

I love using seasonal fruits and vegetables because they not only taste better and look better, but if you buy them at the market like I do, you are buying local and supporting your local economy. At many farmer’s markets you can find delicious fruits and veggies. If you have no idea where a farmer’s market is around you, I found this awesome site with a listing of local markets by state.

I know you are reading this, and wondering what my favorite summer fruits and vegetables are. Well, I love blueberries and strawberries, along with fresh pineapple, and pounce on fresh green peppers whenever I can.

What is your favorite summer fruit or vegetable? Leave a comment below and let me know how you use your favorite produce items.

I Pass the Burlington Free Press Test

Cruising through the local paper this morning. I was actually reading yesterday’s paper today, but I found an article on what you should look for in an energy bar, and I believe that Eddie’s Energy Bars pass the test with flying colors. Here is the little excerpt here. This excerpt was only in the paper, and not online.

I just want to point a few things. Most of our bars do contain dried fruit, oats, soy flour, chocolate chips, and brown sugar. This, together with some other ingredients does form a short ingredient list that is easy to pronounce. That’s what I was going for when creating this bar.

Our bars do not contain any chemicals, preservatives, or corn syrups. We also do not hide the truth–our bars are all less than 300 calories, but still have the same great taste you would find in such food.

Sure, options do include Luna bars, Clif bars, and others, but give the small Vermont guy a chance. Order some Vermont homemade energy bars today!

Custom-Labeled Energy Bars

Good Afternoon,

I hope you all enjoyed the beautiful weekend outside, and spent quality time with your father, grandfather, or another man in your life for Father’s Day.  I spent the afternoon yesterday making energy bars.  I made some peanut-butter chocolate chip (a customer favorite), and a custom order.

This custom order was for Lauren Wooden, the Principal at Richmond Elementary School, right in my town.  I had recently learned from my mom, who is a secretary there that last year she gave out candy bars to the teachers as a thank you.  Candy Bars!?!  I knew I had to do something about this.  These teachers needed a healthier alternative to keep them going right up through report cards.  I proposed to Lauren, a custom-labeled energy bar.

This energy bar ended up being custom in more ways than one.  It was a custom flavor, a custom size, and a custom label. The flavor was chocolate chocolate chip (which will be on the market soon–don’t worry), the size was basically a snack size, half the size of a normal Eddie’s bar, and the label was custom designed by myself.  You can check out a picture of the custom bar below.

Are you interested in getting some custom-labeled energy bars for your next event? Contact us for a quote, and we will get back to you within a few business days. There are endless possibilities: weddings, company outings, graduation, etc.
You can supply the label, or we can design it for you.  Whatever you want, we can probably do it.

Have you ever seen custom-labeled energy bars?  I didn’t think so.  We’re a different company.  Contact us to have a stand-out gift at your event.

What? I Need to Diet and Exercise?
June 8, 2007, 10:05 am

I don’t really think I can remember the last time that I wrote about nutrition and fitness on this blog. There have been so many exciting personal stories that I thought I should share. Today, I thought I would get back to business (no pun intended) and write on a topic you readers probably would want to read about, seeing as I own a healthy energy bar company. Here goes:

Everyone sees those ads on TV for weight-loss pills and all that associated junk. It’s time for you to realize that it is not the right way to maintain a healthy lifestyle. To keep your heart running strong, and those pounds of fat off your body, the key, as many educated doctors will tell you, is diet and exercise. They are completely right (no surprise there)!

Diet
Would you rather have a bowl of fruit salad or a McD’s double cheeseburger. I would hope that if you are reading this entry, you would opt for the fruit salad, however, there still could be a few of you that are just now realizing the difference between good and bad food. Now this is not to say, you have to always eat food that is good for you. Every once in a while. you can splurge on the pint of delicious, Vermont-made, Ben and Jerry’s, but it is important to balance all that fat out with fruits, vegetables, grains, and, well…basically follow the food pyramid. In my opinion, not only does good food taste better, but it is also more nutritionally beneficial. If you keep on eating McD’s multiple times a day, you are essentially killing your heart, which leads me to why you need to keep that heart pumping, and engage in exercise a couple times a week.

Exercise
Ahh, exercise. Although it sounds like the devil-word to most people in this increasingly obese country, it is the most important thing you can do to create that healthy lifestyle you have always wanted. Exercising not only keeps your heart pumping, but it releases endorphins in your brain that make you feel better, and who doesn’t want to feel better? It makes one wonder why the morbidly obese people are so sad…they don’t exercise, and eat food to overcome the depression. Any exercise is good for you, so try and at least walk for twenty to thirty minutes during the day. Can’t fit in exercise everyday? Read my article on fitting walking into your work day.

Throwing the time-tested combination of diet and exercise together will put you on the right path to a new, healthier lifestyle.

Thanks for reading. Now go walk and eat strawberries.

April Snow Showers Bring No May Flowers

FREE SAMPLES: CONTACT US TODAY! TIME IS RUNNING OUT!

Not my usual topic today, but I am going to talk about something that is talked about across the globe, and at many watercoolers in the corporate world, and that’s the weather.

What is going on here? It’s Apil 4th and there is snow, rain, and even a nice dose of hail that came down earlier this morning. I know we’re actually getting some accumulation up in Vermont, where Eddie’s all natural homemade energy bars are manufactured. I read in a Burlington Free Press article today, that there have been only two April’s on record where it has not snowed in Vermont. I thought that was a crazy statistic–two times!

Despite the ugliness of snow and cold, I think it’s time for spring. I find it quite hilarious when the TODAY show talks about making sure your lawn is green for summer when there is still snow on the ground…I don’t understand. One thing I want to make sure you are ready for are these beautiful spring and summer months, loaded with geting outside into the fresh spring air and eating lots and lots of energy bars.

The next day it hits above 60 degrees, I say we all get outside and go for a run, bike, hike, or a walk. This day needs a name–any ideas?
